In the four-plus decades that local high school indoor track and field athletes competed at Manley Field House, many memories had been shaped. And before leaving Manley for good, Section III’s finest had one more chance to leave an impression during Friday’s State Qualifier — a task that Fayetteville-Manlius junior Alex Hatz took to heart. Lined up in the 1,000-meter run against Marcellus star Chris Stogsdill, Hatz knew he had to run real well to win, so he took the early lead and maintained a furious pace as Stogsdill chased him around the Manley oval. When they hit the line, Hatz was 1.39 seconds ahead — and with his time of 2:26.44, he had shattered, by more than a second, a Section III record for the 1,000 that dated back to 1975. Dan Paige set that mark, and now Hatz owned it. That was just one of many highlights for local athletes as they made their last laps around Manley before it gets remade into a Syracuse University practice facility. Hatz’s F-M teammate, Brendan Farrell, won a thrilling mile battle with Westhill’s Chris Moore. They nearly hit the line together, but Farrell, in 4:29.98, beat Moore by 0.05 seconds to qualify for this Saturday’s state championships at Cornell University. Jamesville-DeWitt’s David Salbert beat the field in the triple jump, going 43 feet 11 1/2 inches, more than a foot ahead of Corcoran’s Trenton Sparks. In the 4×800 relay, the Red Rams’ quartet of Bumkuth Jiak, Tim Kendrick, Max Smith and Jake Pusey finished third in 8:27.90. On the girls side, F-M’s Courtney Chapman tore up the field in the 1,500-meter run, her time of 4:37.07 beating Cicero-North Syracuse’s Lindsay Raulli by more than 19 seconds. CBA’s Katie Brislin finished third in 5:00.46. And it didn’t stop there for the Hornets, as Chapman, Hannah Luber, Jessica Marini and Gennie Ariotti combined to win the 4×800 relay in 9:39.48. The Hornets’ Natalie Alibrandi grabbed third at 600 meters in 1:42.79. Brislin’s CBA teammate, Melissa Zajdel, prevailed in the 300-meter dash in 41.32 seconds. Carol Giblin (3:08.86) and Rachel Zajdel (3:10.45) were third and fourth, respectively, at 1,000 meters. But the Brothers fared best in the 4×400 relay, finishing on top as Brislin, Melissa Zajdel, Taylor Gait and Julia Quigley posted a time of 4:08.63, nearly three seconds clear of second-place Corcoran. In a close 3,000-meter race, J-D’s Eileen Cody led late, but got passed by Baldwinsville’s Danae Polsin as Cody finished second in 10:53.17 as Polsin won in 10:52.85. J-D was also third in the 4×200 relay in 1:51.47. F-M’s tandem of Alex Seabury and Kelly Perry got fifth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump, while J-D’s Marissa Colavecchio cleared 8 feet for fifth place in the pole vault.
