Given the path the Cazenovia girls volleyball team ook to win the Section III Class B championship, any kind of challenge that followed would seem reasonable. Sure enough, in last Saturday’s regional final at Beekmantown, the Lakers came out on top, sweeping Plattsburgh in three games to win its second regional title in four years. The win also proved to be a milestone, as head coach Brian Ellithorpe gained his 200th career victory. During his tenure with the Lakers, Ellithorpe has won nearly 71 percent of his matches. Once Cazenovia earned a 25-20 victory in the opening game, it seemed to relax a bit, easily claiming the second game 25-18. And though the third game proved to be tighter, the Lakers still won 25-23 to close out the sweep. Leah McAleer finished with 10 kills, while fellow front-line player Julie Gregg stood out, too, as she earned 14 digs. In all, the Lakers went 21-4 this winter, but will see Gregg, McAleer, Alissa Easterly and Devyn Speer depart. Players like Megan Robinson, Rachel Burbidge, Lindsay Nourse, Lizzy Reed and Hannah Koennecke will lead Cazenovia’s quest to repeat in 2009-10.
