Only a Section III Class C championship run would satisfy the Bishop Grimes girls basketball team, and it is inching closer to that goal. As the no. 2 seed in the C-2 bracket, the Cobras spent 10 days after its Feb. 14 win over Tully resting, recuperating and practicing whatever it would need to navigate through the playoff trail. So when the time came to return last Tuesday night in East Syracuse, Grimes was ready — as no. 7 seed Dolgeville found out in the course of a 49-18 decision. Throughout the first half, the Cobras’ defense established itself, limiting the Blue Devils to a handful of baskets while its own offense battled for points. Yet even a 22-10 halftime lead wasn’t safe enough, so Grimes decided to add more pressure. The end result was a third-quarter shutout as the Cobras reeled off 16 unanswered points and punched its ticket to the next round. Amanda Marcely produced a double-double, with 12 points and 10 rebounds, all part of a deep offense where 12 different players got at least one point. Cady Kalemba had eight points, with Tenley Pitonzo and Amelia Heiselman each getting five points. This leads to Saturday’s C-2 semifinal at Chittenango against no. 3 seed Waterville, who crushed Fabius-Pompey 49-21 to reach this point. The winner gets Mohawk or Beaver River in the C-2 final next Tuesday night at Rome Free Academy.
