Once again, the Christian Brothers Academy girls basketball team is in the Section III Class AA semifinals, hoping it can top its run to this exact same round a year ago. Getting back to this point required CBA to first deal with no. 7 seed West Genesee in Tuesday night’s AA quarterfinals at Buddy Wleklinski Court. It proved to be far from smooth on the Brothers’ part, but solid defense and variety on the offensive side meant a 63-51 victory over the Wildcats. Not showing much rust from an 11-day layoff, the Brothers instead turned up its defense from the opening tip, forcing turnovers and getting six unanswered points before WG could even take a shot. By the end of the first quarter, it was 20-12, but WG refused to go away quickly, slowing CBA down for a while and only trailing 30-24 at the break. Eventually, that pressure started to take a toll, especially in a 20-8 third-quarter burst, and despite the fact that Wildcats star Alyssa Sutherland led both sides with 28 points, WG couldn’t catch up. Both Sutherland and teammate Allie Kotula (10 points) would foul out in the fourth quarter. Leanne Ockenden, with 18 points, was one of four CBA players to hit double figures. Kayla Stroman chimed in with 14 points, with Victoria Johnson earning 12 points and Michelle Wiese coming off the bench to earn 11 points. Michelle Damico had eight points. CBA deals with no. 3 seed Cicero-North Syracuse (19-2) in Friday night’s AA semifinal at Liverpool. The winner gets Corcoran or Fayetteville-Manlius in the March 7 finals at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
