Chittenango’s girls basketball team had no intention of making a brief visit to the Section III Class A playoffs. In fact, the no. 11 seed Bears, for quite a while, had no. 6 seed Jamesville-DeWitt in trouble during last Friday night’s opening-round game before a career effort from Jessica Kramer put an end to Chittenango’s dreams and led to a 51-35 defeat. Having just faced J-D in regular-season play, the Bears, despite its 5-15 mark, knew exactly what was coming and how to defend it. To that end, Chittenango matched baskets with J-D throughout the first two periods, doing a terrific job containing J-D star Alyssa Gratien with a triangle-and-two defense (she had just three points all night) and bravely earning a 16-16 halftime tie. Just as that happened, though, Kramer took charge in the third quarter on the Rams’ behalf. She did most of the damage as J-D outscored the Bears 16-6 in that frame to pull in front for good. By the time the night was done, Kramer had 29 points, more than half her team’s output, and the Bears couldn’t recover from it. Maggie Kendrick led Chittenango with 13 points, while Kayleigh Clark earned 10 points. Jessica Antelmi added six points.
