To say that the Westhill boys basketball team had a nice weekend would be understating the point. First, the Warriors went out Friday night and beat Solvay 65-41. That win, combined with Hannibal’s loss to Bishop Grimes, meant that Westhill would share the OHSL Liberty division regular-season title with Hannibal and Grimes, plus Marcellus. Then on Sunday, the Warriors found out it had the no. 1 seed for the Section III Class B-1 playoffs, and could meet Solvay again Friday night if the no. 8 seed Bearcats beat no. 9 seed Cazenovia in Tuesday’s opening round. Fresh off near-upsets of Hannibal and Marcellus, Solvay went into last Friday’s game with the confidence that, at home, it could make Westhill sweat, too. All that changed, though, when the alert Warriors roared to a 21-6 first-quarter lead. From that point forward, Westhill nursed its big edge behind a deep and balanced attack. Tom Fisher led both sides with 15 points. Dan Ross landed 13 points, as Nate Nigolian earned 10 points. Mike Mascari (nine points), Dan Karleski (eight points) and Mike McMullen (six points) added further depth. Westhill’s punishing defense turned Solvay into mostly a two-man show where only Dan Aiello and Andrew Lucio (13 points each) could produce with regularity. Tom Hayes added six points.
