Due to the fact that Solvay and Westhill had a joint wrestling team, combined enrollment puts the Bearcats into the Class AA category when the post-season rolls around. Thus, Solvay was up at Cicero-North Syracuse last Saturday for the Class AA championship meet — and faring quite well. All told, the Bearcats earned 123 points and finished fourth in a 12-team field. Baldwinsville won with 205.5 points as Cicero-North Syracuse (173.5 points) and Corcoran (128.5 points) took second and third, respectively. Tom Bradley earned the title at 215 pounds. He pinned Auburn’s Matt Mattes and Rome Free Academy’s Jacob Forster to reach the finals, then held off B’ville’s Kyle Sheridan to win a 5-3 decision and grab the top spot on the podium. Meanwhile, Aaron Benedict earned the 130-pound championship. He had to wrestle four matches at CNS, but dominated in three preliminary matches by a combined score of 30-1. In the finals against B’ville’s Cookie Caloia, Benedict earned his third shutout, a 6-0 decision. Two other Bearcat wrestlers came close to the top. Mike Warne advanced to the 152-pound final but took an 8-6 loss to RFA’s Stefano Iodice, while Mitch Anthony, at 135 pounds, got to the title match before falling to CNS’s James Segars 8-3. Tom Sansone finished fourth at 285 pounds, while J.T. Romagnoli (103 pounds) and Zach Anderson (145 pounds) each had sixth-place efforts. West Genesee, also at the Class AA meet, would only manage a ninth-place finish in a field of 12, earning 92 points, not even half of what B’ville (205.5 points) used to finish in front. Ian Coolican emerged with the 103-pound championship. He routed Brandon Engebretsen (Central Square) 9-1 in the semifinals, then held off Corcoran’s Mike Miranda in a 3-2 title match. Heitham Wady earned third place at 145 pounds when B’ville’s Nate Russell had to default due to injury. Erik Krohl matched that finish by getting revenge on Peck in the 140-pound consolation match, winning by the exact same 4-2 margin by which Peck had prevailed earlier in the week. At 112 pounds, Connor Grome finished fifth, edging Central Square’s Alex Potts 4-3, while Jason Fitch (125 pounds) claimed fifth as he pinned Tyler Kolbasook in 2:30. Pete Schoeneck (215 pounds) beat Stephen Breen (Fayetteville-Manlius) for his own fifth-place finish. Further to the north, Jordan-Elbridge competed in the Class B championship at South Jefferson and earned 54 points for 11th place. Phoenix won with 259 points. Twice, the Eagles put wrestlers into the championship round. Mike Nguyen got to the 112-pound final, only to run into Phoenix’s one-time state champion, Kyle Crisafulli, and take a first-period pin. Bryan Murray, at 285 pounds, got closer to the top, running into defending sectional champion Chris Pike (Sherburne-Earlville) and losing a 3-0 decision in their final match. Preston Bishop, at 119 pounds, edged Matt Marcheterre (Marcellus) 2-1 for third place. They all go to Utica Memorial Auditorium this weekend for the Section III championship meets — J-E on Saturday (Division II), Solvay and West Genesee on Sunday (Division I).
