Even in a year when it couldn’t get to the top of the standings, the Liverpool boys swim team found a way to stay close and in touch. During Thursday’s Section III Class A championship meet at Nottingham High School, the Warriors picked up 318 points, finishing third. West Genesee won with 387 points as Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA (322 points) took second place. James Walker finished third in the 100 backstroke in 56.30 seconds and sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.73. Taylor Vogt (385.25 points) and Tim Roche (382.35 points) got third and fourth, respectively, in the diving competition. Paul Telesca was fifth in the 100 freestyle (49.88 seconds) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (22.56 seconds), while Joe Lee had a fifth-place clocking of 5:11.33 in the 500 freestyle. Among the relays, Liverpool fared best in the 400 freestyle, claiming third place in 3:24.67 as Auburn won in 3:17.18 and J-D/CBA (3:17.18) took second. The Warriors were fourth in both the 200 medley relay (1:44.22) and 200 freestyle relay (1:30.89). When all the swimmers gathered Saturday for the overall sectional meet, Liverpool picked up 242 points, again finishing third. West Genesee (343 points) prevailed, with Mexico (255 points) just ahead of the Warriors in third place. Paul Telesca, with his sixth-place time of 22.41 seconds in the 50 freestyle final, clinched a berth in the March 6-7 state meet, to be held at Nassau County Aquatic Center on Long Island. Walker did the same when he finished third in the 100 backstroke in 56.41 seconds. In division, Vogt was fifth, with 379.90 points, with Roche sixth as he earned 370.70 points. Liverpool was third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:23.62) and 200 medley relay (1:43.29), and fifth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:30.47.
