Again taking charge in a local rivalry before heading off to the post-season, the Marcellus girls basketball team went to Skaneateles last Thursday night and registered a 41-27 victory over the Lakers. With that win, the Mustangs closed the regular season at 13-7, doing so by playing strong, consistent defense against a game Skaneateles opponent. In fact, the Lakers owned a 7-5 lead at the end of a low-scoring first quarter. Marcellus turned it around, though, by dominating the next two periods. Up 17-12 at the break, the Mustangs doubled its output during a 17-4 run after halftime. Christa Rockburn, with 12 points, was the only player on either side to score in double figures. Melissa Lee had eight points, while Kate Gosson picked up seven points. For Skaneateles, Jackie Leslie led the way with eight points. To start out its week, Skaneateles hosted Bishop Ludden last Monday and never recovered from a poor first half in a 52-34 loss to the Gaelic Knights. Even though it was playing for the fifth time in eight days, Ludden looked far from tired as it jumped out to a 39-16 halftime edge. The Lakers played better defense in the second half, with Ashley Sheldon (nine points), Leslie (seven points) and Emily Call (six points) all making contributions on the offensive side. Still, the Gaelic Knights kept its comfortable margin, as Michelle Roesch led them with 14 points and Ashley Cianfriglia hit three 3-pointers on her way to 11 points. Marcellus went to Solvay on Tuesday night and got another big performance from Megan Tock to help put together a 50-36 victory over the Bearcats. A big first quarter helped, as the Mustangs sped out to a 15-6 lead. For the rest of the night, any time the Solvay tandem of Tessa Pucello (18 points) and Liz Martinez (13 points) offered up a challenge, Marcellus answered. Tock often did the honors, connecting on five 3-pointers to finish with 23 points on the night, while Lee finished with 10 points. Gosson added six points.
