A steep, yet exciting path awaits the Marcellus girls volleyball team as it tries to win its third straight Section III Class B championship. As the no. 5 seed in the Class B tournament, the Mustangs hosted no. 12 seed Westhill in Tuesday night’s opening round. It’s possible that Marcellus could face no. 4 seed Cazenovia in the quarterfinals and top seed Canastota in the semifinals to reach the Feb. 21 final at Jamesville-DeWitt — where Skaneateles could be waiting. The Mustangs began this last week of the regular season by hosting Hannibal and sweeping past the Warriors 25-12, 25-20, 26-24. Francesca Tangredi did most of the work as setter, earning 13 assists as Samantha Vulcano got six assists. Up front, Rebecca Eddy had five kills and Kayla Howard added four kills. Rachel Eddy stepped in for five aces as Kassie Phillips (four aces) and Carly Annable (three aces) also served well. In the first of back-to-back weekend matches, the Mustangs swept Jordan-Elbridge 25-13, 25-22, 25-18 on Friday night. Kelly McInerney stepped up for 10 kills and four blocks, while Howard earned eight kills. Phillips had five kills, three aces and two blocks. Vulcano picked up 22 assists. It took the Mustangs four games to take out Jamesville-DeWitt Saturday. It won the first two games 25-17 and 25-22, then lost the third game 25-22 before roaring through the fourth game in a 25-11 rout. Libero Carly Annable, with 10 aces, set a tone as McInerney earned 12 kills and Phillips moved up to nine kills, three aces and three blocks. Howard gained five kills and three blocks as Jenna Sniffen stepped up for four aces and Vulcano got 25 assists.
