As the newly-minted OHSL Liberty division regular-season champions, the Skaneateles girls volleyball team has a favorable draw in the Section III Class B playoffs. The Lakers, as a no. 2 seed, gain a first-round bye, and will be at home to face either no. 7 seed CBA or no. 10 seed Mount Markham in the quarterfinal round. Skaneateles avoids four tough opponents (Canastota, Homer, Skaneateles and Cazenovia), all of whom are in the top half of the tournament bracket. Before getting a peek at its post-season path, the Lakers first had to navigate through one last wave of OHSL Liberty division matches. And no match proved bigger than Thursday night’s battle at Homer, where the Lakers got some revenge in a three-game sweep of the Trojans to clinch the league championship. Homer had knocked off Skaneateles on Jan. 27, the second of back-to-back defeats the Lakers took (Marcellus was the other). Remembering this, the Lakers were ready from the start for the Homer rematch. And once it took the opening game 25-23, Skaneateles took charge and, in the next two games, won each of them by 25-13 margins. Katherine Hill produced seven kills, as Ryan Merle and Emily Wood each finished with six kills and six blocks. Destin VanTyle mixed in five assists, three kills, three blocks and three aces, while Chloe Warner gained 14 assists, three kills and three aces. Alexa Campanile contributed four kills. Going to Westhill last Tuesday night, the Lakers sweated a bit, but still swept past the Warriors 25-17, 25-14, 25-20. Warner, with her 18 assists, helped Merle and Wood each finish with nine kills. Katherine Hill had four kills and VanTyle got three assists and two kills. Westhill had Courtney Price earn seven kills and Erika Thomas pick up 13 assists.
