An eventful weekend for local girls high school basketball teams included Bishop Ludden nearly topping a Class AA power and Westhill beating Jordan-Elbridge for the second time in February. Ludden nearly atoned for its narrow one-point defeat to Cazenovia on Wednesday by taking Fayetteville-Manlius to overtime in Friday’s appearance at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Central Square before taking a 59-53 loss to the Hornets. F-M, from the Class AA ranks, bolted on top of the Gaelic Knights 14-3 and kept that margin until the fourth quarter, when Ludden charged back. Down by three as time was running out in regulation, Ludden turned to Ashley Cianfriglia, who swished another 3-pointer to tie it, 51-51, and force overtime. In those four minutes of OT, though, the Gaelic Knights had just two points. For the night, Cianfriglia had 24 points, including five 3-pointers, while Michelle Roesch added 10 points. Torie Lee led F-M with 20 points, with Emily Trapani (16 points) close behind. Forced to make up a game with Homer on Saturday, Ludden, in its fourth game in six days, crushed the Trojans 73-28 for its biggest winning margin of the season. Cianfriglia had 20 points, but the other starters got some much-needed rest as Remi Maggio came off the bench to score a career-best 12 points. Grace Rooney and Kristen Ryan each had eight points, with Kayla Kibling and Gabby Palazolla getting six points apiece. Later that day, Westhill, who beat Jordan-Elbridge 53-35 on Tuesday, proved more impressive in the rematch, ripping the Eagles 63-27. Westhill started with a 17-3 push, and when J-E tried to resist, the Warriors proceeded to hold them to 10 points in the entire second half. Emily Haggerty stepped up in a big way, earning 19 points, with Annie O’Connor (who is going to Wagner College on Staten Island for lacrosse next fall) adding 17 points. Sam Marshall chimed in with 12 points as Cooper earned 10 points. Liz Caspari, with seven points, was J-E’s top scorer. The Eagles could still clinch a winning record if it won Tuesday at Port Byron before coming home Wednesday to face Cazenovia. Westhill’s own big rematch with Cazenovia on Friday could decide the OHSL Liberty division regular-season title.
