Already with a regular-season OHSL Liberty division title in hand, the Cazenovia wrestling team moved on to combined OHSL Liberty/Patriot Tournament, held Saturday at Solvay High School, where it would finish in third place. Overall, the Lakers had 168.5 points, just behind Cato-Meridian (170 points) in the runner-up spot as Hannibal, with 214 points, finished on top. Alex Petroff, for the fourth time, won at this meet — and he earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors in the process. At 125 pounds, Petroff earned two pins in less than a minute to reach the finals, where against Pat Cost (Marcellus), he won an 8-2 decision. Brad Nardella, competing at 96 pounds, earned Cazenovia’s other title. He shut out Riley Delaney (Solvay) 16-0 in the semifinal round before handling Jordan-Elbridge’s Mitch Alpha by a score of 6-2 in the championship round. Dan Cossitt got to the 145-pound finals, but lost to Nathan Hunt (Skaneateles) in a first-period pin. Sam Taylor (171 pounds) got third place when he pinned another Skaneateles wrestler, Chris Wise, in 3:57, while Teddy Kugler (119 pounds) pinned Hannibal’s Kirk Kinville for third place. Jose Wells (112 pounds), Clancy Kemp (215 pounds) and Ryan Cook (112 pounds) all had fourth-place efforts, while Phil Kugler beat Joe Wallingford (Tully) in a second-period pin for fifth place at 160 pounds. Jake Ayer (215 pounds) also took fifth, pinning Hannibal’s Steve Kingsley. This began the post-season for the Lakers, who go north to South Jefferson Saturday at 10 a.m. for the Section III Class B championships. Top finishers in Adams advance to the overall sectional Division II meet Feb. 21 at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
