One of the most decorated athletes in the history of Oneida High School has decided to stay close to home for his collegiate career. Ryan Kramer, a three-sport superstar who led the Oneida football team to last fall’s state Class B championship game, has decided to stay on the gridiron and attend Colgate University, picking the Raiders over Patriot League rivals Bucknell and Fordham. Kramer made the announcement more than a week before the official NCAA signing day, which is next Wednesday. He said a weekend visit to the Colgate campus in Hamilton and the straightforward approach of its head coach, Dick Biddle, helped make up his mind. From 2006 to 2008, Kramer was Oneida’s quarterback, following in the footsteps of older brother Rob, who owns each of the school’s career passing records. While not reaching those numbers, Kramer had strong sophomore and junior campaigns — but that only served as the warm-up for what took place in the fall of ’08. Starring on both sides of the ball, Kramer threw for 1,712 yards and 20 touchdowns, and was also a threat on the ground and as a defensive back. All this helped Oneida reach the Carrier Dome and its first-ever state final before falling to Rye. For all this, Kramer earned a spot on the state Class B All-State first team. Despite his great work at quarterback, it’s likely that Colgate, who is set at the QB position (Greg Sullivan started last year and will only be a junior in 2009), will convert Kramer into a receiver and return specialist. Kramer often returned kicks at Oneida, so it won’t be a big stretch. Of course, Kramer’s exploits at Oneida include becoming the school’s all-time scoring leader in basketball, with close to 1,500 career points as the Indians have already secured a winning record in 2008-09 with an 11-5 record. Kramer is also a first-rate baseball player. As a shortstop at Oneida, he was named a third-team All-State selection in 2008 and starred for the Smith squad in American Legion play.
