All that glory the Jamesville-DeWitt boys basketball team has achieved on the court has translated into recognition beyond local and state borders. As of now, the Red Rams are ranked no. 9 among teams in the Eastern part of the United States in USA Today’s latest survey. And it keeps getting the wins to back that up. At home Thursday night to face Bishop Ludden, the Red Rams got challenged for a while, but pulled away in the second half to beat the Gaelic Knights 72-41. Ludden was reeling from back-to-back defeats to Bishop Kearney and Binghamton, and it was getting two starters, John Rooney (thigh bruise) and Jared Littlejohn (shoulder), back from injuries. Sensing this, J-D began the game on a 16-1 tear, all in the first five minutes as it threatened to end the game early. But when Brandon Triche (who had just 10 points) picked up his second foul early in the second quarter, Ludden pounced, pulling within seven, 29-22, and so frustrating the Rams that Alshwan Hymes got hit with a technical foul just before halftime. J-D’s depth and athleticism were too much for the Gaelic Knights to handle, though. It used a 7-0 outburst early in the third quarter to regain control, then steadily built the margin until a 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter ended the drama. Hymes, despite foul issues, and DaJuan Coleman both finished with 13 points. Steven Thomson had nine points, with Lamar Kearse adding eight points and Demetrius Mitchell six points. Ludden’s Rick Montgomery led both sides with 14 points. Now J-D prepares to go to Villanova University in suburban Philadelphia next Saturday night to face Northeast Catholic, one of that area’s best teams, in the Prime Time Shoot-out.
