To most challengers in the OHSL Patriot division, the Bishop Grimes girls basketball team had offered little mercy. So it was quite ironic that the biggest threat to the Cobras’ league domination came in the form of an injury-riddled, short-handed Weedsport squad that nearly pulled off a big surprise last Tuesday night before Grimes beat the Warriors 47-42. Weedsport had just six healthy players ready to go, yet still sported a 9-3 record because its top star, Kaitlin Hammersley, had avoided all the trouble and stayed out there to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career. And Hammersley would be quite good against Grimes, too, pushing the Warriors to a 10-8 edge before Grimes’ overall defense led to a turnaround in the game’s middle stages. The Cobras were up 33-27 through three periods, then moved the margin to 11 at one point in the third quarter. Still, Weedsport wouldn’t quit, closing the gap as Hammersley worked her way to 21 points and Grimes helped by missing six straight free throws. Still, the Cobras finished on top, overcoming a quiet night from its top scorer, Amelia Heiselman, who had just a single 3-pointer as the main focus of Weedsport’s defensive attention. Others gladly stepped up, though, including Amanda Marcely, who had 11 points and nine rebounds. Cady Kalemba and Cassidy Weeks closely followed, with 10 points apiece, while Tenley Pitonzo earned eight points. This, combined with the win over Tully the night before, left the Cobras at 11-1 going into Thursday’s home game against Cato-Meridian.
