Except for those who were there, one could only speculate about what went on during Monday’s Bishop Ludden boys basketball practice. In the aftermath of a 27-point debacle against “Holy War” rival CBA on Sunday at LeMoyne College that included getting shut out in the entire first quarter, head coach Pat Donnelly pushed his Gaelic Knights hard, and looked to see how those players responded to outright embarrassment. The answer came a night later, at Chittenango, when Ludden essentially did to the Bears what CBA had done to them — only without the first-quarter blanking and with more points as the Gaelic Knights took a 65-26 victory. All through the first half, the Gaelic Knights (still without suspended forward Frank Smith) swarmed and overwhelmed Chittenango on the defensive side, forcing a long string of turnovers and converting them into baskets. By the break, it was already 36-13, but Ludden didn’t let up, as even the reserves put in strong minutes down the stretch, long after the game was settled. Rick Montgomery, with 12 points, led a deep, balanced Gaelic Knights attack where all 11 players that saw court time scored. Jim Sierotnik had 10 points, while Jared Littlejohn and Matt Pirro got nine points. All of Pirro’s points came from a trio of 3-pointers. E.J. Beauford added six points. Ludden, now with a record of 9-3, is back home Friday to face Phoenix.
