Locked in a spirited battle for the CNY Counties League National division title with the likes of Cicero-North Syracuse and West Genesee, the Baldwinsville wrestling team looked forward to confronting both of them. But the meeting with West Genesee, set for Wednesday night, got snowed out, and got rescheduled for Feb. 10, which will now conclude the league schedule. So B’ville would have to settle for working through a long series of tournaments that have, for the most part, gone well. It all began on Dec. 30, when B’ville traveled to Middlebury, in Vermont, for the Hubie Wagner Invitational and won the overall team title. With 296 points, B’ville easily outlasted Vergennes, who was second with 221 points. Middlebury (123 points), Cohoes (112 points) and Mount Anthony (101.5 points) rounded out the field. Seven different B’ville wrestlers won their respective weight classes. Kyle Sheridan (215 pounds) pinned Cohoes’ Greg Mallnow in 3:46 during their title match, while Anthony Finocchiaro (112 pounds) earned a third-period pin over Vergennes’ Ricky Karzmarcyk. Tim Hamm won at 130 pounds with a technical fall over Max Flynn (Vergennes), while the other champions all claimed their first-place medals through decisions. At 96 pounds, Joey Shaheen beat Kaleb Fushey (Milton) 10-5, while John Hierholzer (125 pounds) routed Middlebury’s Jarrod Ashley 13-4. Andrew Giromini, at 171 pounds, beat Fair Haven’s Joe Durfee 6-2 and Antonio Peck (140 pounds) earned a 9-7 overtime victory over Rutland’s Mike Smith. Sean Hennigan finished second at 160 pounds, while Nick Jacobs earned third place at 119 pounds. Cookie Caloia got fourth place at 135 pounds, with Kurt McArdell claiming fifth place in the 152-pound category. During the tournament, Giromini earned a seven-second pin, while Sheridan got a nine-second pin. Buyck and Hennigan both gained 14-second pins, too. From there, B’ville went to the Mountain Duals on Jan. 2 at Herkimer County Community College, where it tied for fifth in a field of 20 teams with a 7-3 mark. Longwood was the only 10-0 team in the field. B’ville would defeat Hadley Luzerne (63-18), Petrides (53-18), Herkimer (66-16), Adirondack (51-28), Cicero-North Syracuse (63-24), Rome Free Academy (46-19) and Camden (63-13), but take losses to Greece Olympia (43-29), Valley Central (55-30) and Colonie (43-25) before it was all done.
