Now the Baldwinsville girls tennis team has its long-awaited second chance to dethrone Fayetteville-Manlius. In Monday’s Section III Class A team tournament semifinal, the Bees shut out the Whitesboro Warriors, 7-0, setting up Thursday’s championship match against the Hornets at Utica Parkway Courts. These same two teams also reached the 2006 team final, with the Hornets coming out on top. When they first met this season, way back on Aug. 30, the Bees lost, but the 5-2 decision included two matches where F-M needed three sets to prevail — the closest anyone had come to beating the Hornets in a long time. Since then, the Bees have not suffered a blemish, and built its record to 12-1 by taking care of Whitesboro in decisive fashion. In quick singles matches, Becky Guzzo ripped Ashley Waldren 6-0, 6-1, and Bri Pollard topped Mary Orsaio 6-1, 6-0. Cali Nizamis took a bit longer, but she still completed the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Alex Sazlipour. The domination continued in doubles, where Lauren Schaefer and Rachel Taylor had the longest match, beating Jackie Bogdan and Alyssa Moskal 6-4, 6-2. Addie and Gen Schmidt teamed to beat Alex and Arielle Armstrong 6-4, 6-0. Daniele Darling and Kelly Falconer got past Laura Zabek and Laura Morris 6-3, 6-1, with Amari Pollard and Nicole Leader ripping past Meredith Bartlett and Shannon Olney 6-1, 6-2. B’ville managed to sneak in its Class A quarterfinal against Utica Proctor before the rains hit last Wednesday afternoon, and shut out the Raiders 7-0. Between them, the singles trio of Guzzo, Bri Pollard and Nizamis did not drop a game in 6-0, 6-0 wins over Rose Zaloom, Nicole Rienzo and Nademe Isa. All of the doubles matches were won in straight sets, too. Rachel Green and Darling went to a second-set tie-breaker, but still beat Sam Cardone and Jessica Anson 6-1, 7-6, as Schaefer and Taylor got past Kaitie Brown and Geanna Bruzzese 7-5, 6-0. Elsewhere in this match, the Schmidts routed Amela Guso and Marie Jasinski 6-1, 6-1, with Amari Pollard and Leader rolling past Dollysa Paulino and Priscilla Centeno 6-0, 6-4.
