Having reached new levels of accomplishment in recent years, the Solvay girls basketball team has no intentions of stopping. That much became apparent in the Bearcats’ season-opening tournament, called the Turkey Trot, where it tore through a pair of foes to gain a quick 2-0 start. A season ago, Solvay went 13-9, going to the Section III Class B-1 semifinals for the first time in the program’s history before falling to Westhill. Despite some major departures, including Becky Finch and Kylie Bartlett, the Bearcats still could make noise — as this tournament showed. In the opening round Friday against Jordan-Elbridge, Solvay completely shut the Eagles down for much of the game, cruising to a 46-16 victory. Remarkably, the Bearcats gave up a grand total of five points in the first three quarters of play, taking any kind of suspense out of the game. Carrie Smith, by herself, matched J-E’s output by scoring 16 points, while fellow returnee Chelsey Chavez-Egan earned 13 points. Liz Caspari led J-E with seven points. In the other opening-round game on Friday, Onondaga held off Fowler, 43-40, setting up a championship game on Saturday afternoon between the Tigers and Bearcats. Another day brought another dose of defensive dominance from Solvay, as it ripped OCS 47-25 to claim the first-place trophy. The Tigers never got more than nine points in any single quarter, as the Bearcats steadily built a 23-10 halftime lead and just kept pulling further away. Smith continued to baffle the opposition as she put up 18 points. Erica Griffo emerged to score 10 points, with Kelly Kaltenbach adding six points. Earlier, in the consolation game, J-E fell to Fowler 42-28. The Eagles again started slow and were down, 15-3, after one quarter, yet made a big push before the Falcons closed on an 11-2 run. Caspari (10 points) and Carrie Dungey (seven points) were the Eagles’ top scorers, as Fowler’s Keleisha Brown led both sides with 19 points. As Solvay (2-0) paid a Monday visit to Homer, J-E will visit Skaneateles Wednesday in its OHSL Liberty division opener.
