In each of the last two Section III girls golf championships, Baldwinsville’s Lauren Petty had to settle for the second spot – but as a senior, with one more chance to get to the top, Petty prevailed. Firing a two-over-par 74 at Foxfire Golf Course on Tuesday morning, Petty beat Auburn’s Larissa Carter by two shots to earn the championship and helped the Bees earn fifth place in the Division I (large school) team standings. “It’s great to win and get the one accomplishment I always wanted,” said Petty. And the rewards go beyond a trip to the June 11-12 New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships at SUNY-Delhi. With the win, Petty earned an invitation to compete in the LPGA Futures Tour’s Alliance Bank Golf Classic on July 29-31 at Drumlins Country Club. Amelia Lewis, an LPGA Tour rookie who finished second in last year’s Alliance Bank Classic, was on hand at Foxfire to present Petty with her invitation. With all the experience gained from her near-misses at the sectional tournament in 2009 and 2010, Petty set out at Foxfire and wasted little time getting to the top, making a birdie on the par-four 1st hole. “It was a nice way to start and set the tone for the rest of the round,” said Petty. At the turn, Petty was at 38, the same score as Carter as both players did the best job mastering gusty winds and lush rough that sent the scores of many other contenders soaring. But on the back nine, Petty would move out in front, sealing the title with a birdie at the par-three 17th as she and Carter were the only players to break 80. When Petty goes to the state tournament, she’ll be joined by Carter, Victoria Roney (Jamesville-DeWitt), Mary Fletcher (CBA), Rachel Halwig (Holland Patent) and four players from Division I team champion Fayetteville-Manlius – Meghan Kingsley, Alex Seabury, Carly Kidd and Maria Mintskovsky.
