In rather unfamiliar surroundings, the Marcellus boys golf team experienced an unfamiliar feeling – that of winning a Section III Class B championship. When the Mustangs claimed the team title Monday at Oneida Community Golf Club, it was the first time that Marcellus finished on top since way back in 1985, long before any of the current players were born. In all, 11 teams competed, and Marcellus, with a total of 405, beat Christian Brothers Academy (who had its regular season back in the fall) by eight shots. Skaneateles was third with 416 as Westhill, with 433, slid into sixth place. Marcellus had not played much at Oneida Community, and the conditions were windy. Despite this, the Mustangs saw all six of its players contribute to the championship effort. Joe Felicia led the way with an 18-hole total of 78, only two shots behind the co-medalists, Jeff Baldetti (Skaneateles) and Cody Homer (Mount Markham). Chris Files and Alec Mosher were close behind, both finishing at 80. Ryan Bonk posted an 81, while Adam Kinsella and Zach Anderson also had solid efforts, as Kinsella shot an 86 and Anderson added an 87 to complete the team scoring. Garrett Thompson, playing as an individual, shot an 83. Felicia, Files, Mosher, Bonk and Thompson qualified for the overall sectional tournament, which starts Thursday at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course. Many other local golfers strove to join them, with varying results. Jordan-Elbridge’s Aaron Iddings posted an 82 and advanced. Westhill saw Mike Wild lead the way, posting an 83 as Gus Gosson managed an 85. Mike Marshall and Nate Meisner both shot 88 and Andy Vadnais got an 89. Also for J-E, Ryan Conroy (92), Jake Melfi (93), Tyler Falcone (94) and Pat Hogan (96) broke 100, while Solvay’s Zach Sweet earned a 92.
