Cazenovia girls indoor track and field teammates Jillian Vogl and Piper Gianforte both would emerge victorious from Saturday’s Section III state qualifying meet at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House. Those wins by Vogl, in the 300-meter dash, and Gianforte, in the pole vault, meant that they would travel to Cornell University’s Barton Hall for this Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships. In the 300, Vogl, a junior, and Skaneateles’ Emma Ford battled each other to the finish line, but Vogl prevailed in 42.91 seconds to Ford’s 43.09. Also, Vogl was third in the 55-meter dash in 7.69 seconds, just behind Rome Free Academy’s Vita Puma, who won in 7.62 seconds. Over in the pole vault, Gianforte, a senior, was the only competitor to clear 9 feet, winning that event as Jamesville-DeWitt’s Danielle Doss (8 feet 6 inches) settled for the runner-up spot. Cazenovia grabbed third place in the 4×800 relay as Hollie Marcelle, Margaret Wolsey, Caroline Marshall and Jeanette finished in 10:12.17. Cudney Gianforte, Vogl, Jackie O’Sullivan and Audrey Bowers were fifth in the 4×200 relay in 1:55.52. Marcelle, on her own, took fifth in the 600-meter run in 1:47.32. Paige Biviano was third in the long jump with a best leap of 16 feet 8 inches, also getting seventh in the triple jump by going 31 feet 7 1/4 inches and taking 11th in the 55-meter hurdles. Audrey Bowers was 10th in the triple jump. In the boys state qualifier, Oneida junior Jimmy Moyer dominated the high jump, his clearance of 6 feet 4 inches a full four inches better than the field. He was also third in the triple jump (42 feet 1 inch) and had a fourth-place long jump of 20 feet 5 inches. Chittenango junior Jason Given contended in the 600, his time of 1:26.57 second only to Ryan Manahan (Marcellus), who won in 1:25.87. Cazenovia’s Dylan Muller tied for second in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet 6 inches as Nick Huss (Marcellus) won with 12 feet. Pat Dermody earned fifth place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:06.42.
