Against one of its main rivals, the Skaneateles boys basketball team clinched the outright Onondaga High School League regular-season championship Tuesday night, beating Marcellus 65-51. The Lakers, who improved to 16-1 on the season, won its 15th game in a row. And though the Mustangs had improved a bit from the 75-54 beating Skaneateles gave them on Jan. 11 at Onondaga Community College, it never could follow up a strong first quarter where the Lakers only gained an 18-16 lead. In the next two periods, Skaneateles outscored Marcellus 29-20, steadily building its margin behind a well-balanced attack where all four main figures hit double figures. Pat Roberts led with 15 points, while Paul O’Donnell worked his way to 14 points. Brandon Barron finished with 12 points and Kevin Rice earned five of his 10 points at the free-throw line. Jimmy Atkinson chimed in with six points. Mike Tross, Steve Raven (13 points each) and Geoff Crysler (12 points) led the Marcellus effort. Skaneateles closes the regular season Friday with a big showdown against Bishop Grimes, who could be its chief rival for the sectional Class B crown. Each of the last two meetings have gone to double overtime, with Skaneateles prevailing 95-91 at East Syracuse back on Jan. 14.
