Chasing a Section III Class AA playoff berth, the Baldwinsville boys basketball team continued to move forward at times, but also get hurt. A forward step came last Monday night, at Rome Free Academy, where the Bees used a strong first half as the catalyst for a 62-52 victory over the Black Knights. Willie Hython, Kevin Roy and Kevin Drain carried B’ville’s attack as it worked its way to a 32-22 halftime advantage. Though held to seven points in the third period, the Bees maintained its margin and used a series of late free throws to keep RFA from catching up. Overall, Hython had 19 points, while Roy poured in 18 points and Drain finished with 14 points. The rest of the team had just three field goals. Jon Griggs led RFA with 18 points. Then the Bees were off until Friday night, when it visited defending Section III Class AA champion Cicero-North Syracuse and took an 87-64 loss to the Northstars. A poor start doomed B’ville, as CNS raced ahead of them 24-11 by the time the first quarter was done. Through the game’s middle stages, the Bees kept pace, but could not inch closer, and the Northstars added to its cushion in the late going. Roy led with 16 points, while Drain gained 14 points and Hython finished with 13 points. Ricky Kompf stepped up for eight points and Ben Trudell contributed seven points. On the CNS side, Zach Coleman (24 points), Shakir Thomas (16 points) and Elliott Boyce (16 points) led the way. Home games against Oswego and Fayetteville-Manlius are crucial in the Bees’ playoff push as two weeks remain in the regular season.
