With the weather finally cleared up, the Cicero-North Syracuse wrestling team went down Route 31 to Baldwinsville Friday night, taking its big shot at ending the Bees’ 24-meet CNY Counties League win streak. And the Northstars came awfully close to its goal, only to see the Bees stop them again in a 34-32 classic that was suspenseful from beginning to end. They started by trading win streaks. B’ville claimed the first two matches with decisions, Kiel Dyer (145 pounds) coming close against Antonio Peck before taking a 4-2 defeat. Then, at 152 pounds, Jordan Ramos battled his way past James Eustice 5-2 to put CNS on the board. Andrew Osborne (160 pounds) followed with a second-period pin of Gunner Stephen, and James Segars, at 171 pounds, fought hard to beat Joe Nasoni 5-3. Looking back, the 189-pound match proved pivotal. The Northstars’ Ariel Anoceto enjoyed a comfortable lead on the Bees’ Pat Nasoni until, with 10 seconds to spare, Nasoni made a dramatic move and pinned Anoceto. It was, at least, a 10-point turnaround that looked even bigger after Matt Mastro (215 pounds) beat Brian Hosinger 4-0 and Clayton D’Onofrio (285 pounds) claimed a forfeit. CNS still led 21-13, but had left room for B’ville to hang in there. Sure enough, a decision, pin and forfeit in the next three matches gave the Bees a 28-25 lead despite Dan Ciciarelli (112 pounds) beating Chad McArdell 15-5. And at 125 pounds, Tony Battista dominated against Connor Ross, but just missed a technical fall (and an extra point) in his 19-5 win. Two matches were left, and CNS clung to a 29-28 lead that vanished when B’ville’s Jacob Norton (130 pounds) pinned Jacob Murdock. Thus, Matt Dunham had to pin Ryan McArdell in the 135-pound finale, but only could win a 5-3 decision. As a tune-up for B’ville, the Northstars went to Central Square and prevailed 55-18, its second victory over the Red Hawks in five days, following a 39-35 decision in the quarterfinals of the Jan. 22 Section III Dual Meet. In the sequel, the first four matches were split, but CNS still went ahead 12-9 as Battista and Murdock both earned pins – Battista over James Williams in 3:09, Murdock over Chris Bourassa in 1:44. Tom Peterson (140), with his pin over Dillon Purdy with 20 seconds left, began a surge where Kiel Dyer edged Ronald Burghardt 4-3 and Ramos beat Avery Sigle 10-2. It was 27-18 when, starting at 171, CNS swept the last four matches against the Red Hawks. Segars got a second-period pin of Garrett Claffey and Anoceto took just 58 seconds to pin Nick Baker. D’Onofrio worked faster, finishing off Robert Harper in 38 seconds. Mastro beat Tyler Winn 8-2 before Drew Dyer (96) took out Blake Engebretsen 10-4. Ciciarelli, finished the meet with a 16-0 techincal fall over Ben Mayers. Liverpool was back in action Thursday night, taking on Oswego and easily working its way to a 69-9 victory over the Buccaneers. Six different matches were forfeited to the Warriors as Nathan Gee (103), Sam Marleau (112), Brockton Barton (140), Nate Smith (145), Pat Carroll-Marsh (285) and Travis Chewning-Kulick (96) claimed them. On the mat, Lucas Castellanos, at 125, pinned Matt DiFabio in 57 seconds right after Nate Hathaway (119) pinned Jordan Attwood in 1:10. Mende Cukalevski (160) finished off Adam Doviak in 1:41. Tyler Eason (135) got his pin over Jordan Pluff in 2:40 and Joe Pizzuto (171) earned a second-period pin over Mike Ruggio, with Dakota Inman (152) holding off Eric Sustino-Acton 4-2. Brendon Capria, wrestling at 189, took a 2-1 loss to Dan Ellingwood. Liverpool and all the other large-school teams head to CNS Saturday for the Section III Class AA championship meet, looking to advance to the overall sectional meet Feb. 12 at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
