Onondaga County Parks won two honors at the Central New York Recreation & Park Society awards luncheon held Feb. 26 in East Syracuse, one of which was bestowed upon a Lysander resident. The David M. Guokas Memorial Award, which recognizes excellence by a professional in the field of recreation, parks and leisure services, went to Lysander resident Bob Ellis. A 34-year veteran of County Parks, Ellis is currently running Oneida Shores and Jamesville Beach Parks and coordinating special projects for the department. At the helm of Onondaga Lake Park for over 25 years, he oversaw the transition of the park into one of America’s Top Ten Heritage Parks, a primary destination for residents and tourists alike boasting more than 1.3 million visitors annually. Active in the community, having served for 12 years on town of Lysander Parks and Recreation Commission, the last four as chairman, Ellis has also been a dedicated scout leader for many years.
