A big group of local indoor track and field athletes reached this Saturday’s state championship meet at Cornell University by virtue of their efforts at Monday night’s snow-delayed state qualifier at Manley Field House. The big moment came when Marcellus senior Mike Quercia, in the 600-meter run, equaled his own sectional record with a time of 1:19.37 and beat the field by more than two seconds. WG’s Jake Lafaver was fourth in 1:24.93. Solvay’s C.J. Brooks finished his season-long domination of the shot put, winning that event with a toss of 51 feet 4 3/4 inches, the only Section III competitor to top the 50-foot mark. Westhill’s Kevin Zych would find his way to second place in the 3,200-meter run in 9:42.09, trailing only Alex Hatz, who won in 9:39.08. Further back, Jordan-Elbridge’s Cody Stanton ran to fourth, in 9:50.57, and West Genesee’s Billy Gabriel was fifth in 9:53.18. Another Marcellus star, Jesse Garn, earned his berth with a second-place clocking of 2:34.46 in the 1,000-meter run behind Liverpool’s Zavon Watkins (2:33.75) as another WG runner, Steve Houghmaster, was fourth in 2:37.02. Elsewhere, Marcellus’ Nick Huss took fourth in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet. WG’s team of Jake Lafaver, Zack Lafaver, Sam Reedy and Kyle Ivers finished third in the 4×400 relay in 3:32.01, and the Wildcats were ninth (1:40.03) in the 4×200 relay. John Delallo was fourth in the mile in 4:30.02, with teammates Reedy (seventh), Houghmaster and Martin Leff also in the finals. Jordan-Elbridge’s Greg Bader was ninth in 4:36.96. Another WG runner, Matt Ulrich, was sixth (8.96 seconds) in the 55-meter hurdles. In the girls state qualifier, Bott claimed victory in the 600-meter run, finishing in 1:39.71 to hold off Auburn’s Patricia Fleishman (1:40.27) and the rest of the field. From Marcellus, Laura Quercia was seventh in 1:44.76. Bott also was second in the 300-meter dash in 43.78 seconds as Oswego’s Eliza Parker (43.21 seconds) came out on top. Westhill’s Brenna Rainone was ninth, just as Warrior teammates Paula Sanz got seventh in the pole vault (7 feet 6 inches) and Morgan Roach took eighth in the shot put. Laura Leff earned her berth in the state meet by taking second place in the 3,000-meter run in 10:35.24, with teammate Abby Kastick (11:32.70) in fifth place.
