One more match separates the Baldwinsville boys volleyball team from its first-ever Section III Class AA championship. The Bees, already owner of the CNY Counties League regular-season title, controlled last Wednesday’s AA semifinal against no 4 seed Fayetteville-Manlius from start to finish, sweeping the Hornets in three games. As it turned out, the first game was the most lopsided, with B’ville prevailing 25-16. F-M was closer in the next two games, but the Bees still took them by 25-20 and 25-19 margins. Pete Cuppernull had 30 assists, exactly 10 assists per game, plus five aces. Those passes went to Dan Dubiel and Kyle Lattanzio, each of whom finished with 10 kills, as Jake Zuke added seven kills and three blocks. Jarret Reaume added four kills. B’ville will face Cicero-North Syracuse in next Wednesday’s AA final at the CNS gym. The Northstars beat Central Square in four games in the other semifinal match. All this came as Cuppernull announced that he has verbally committed to George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., to play volleyball in the fall of 2010. George Mason, a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, is considered one of the best men’s programs in the Eastern United States, along with Penn State, and usually ranks among the top 15 programs in the country. Cuppernull’s personal highlights from this past year included playing in the National Junior Olympics in Atlanta, and being selected by USA Volleyball to participate in their High Performance Camp at Long Beach State University in California. Pete ranks sixth in his class out of 471 students. The other colleges he considered included UC-San Diego, Princeton, NYU and Pepperdine.
