Both the Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy girls lacrosse teams took their talents into the Section III Class C playoffs. Only one would get a victory. And even that win didn’t prove easy, as the Red Rams got a strong challenge from South Jefferson in Wednesday’s opening round before beating the Spartans 12-8. Even with an 18-1 record, J-D got a no. 5 seed, behind four teams (Carthage, Westhill, Marcellus and Cazenovia) with worse overall records. Still, those teams breezed through the first round, while J-D did not. The margin got built in the first half, when the Red Rams went ahead 7-3, and every time no. 12 seed South Jefferson would make a run in the late going, J-D would need to answer. Tara Prosak’s 14 saves kept the Spartans at bay, too. Tori Nies had four goals and one assist, with Molly Maroney producing four assists. Meredith Howe and Ashriel West each scored twice, with Kate Byrnes and Emily Johnson each adding one goal and one assist. Morgan Freeman and Taylor Bierwagen scored, too, as Liz Beville got an assist. As J-D moved on, CBA, the no. 8 seed, saw its season end, hurt by Katherine Hunsberger and a poor first half in a 10-7 loss to no. 9 seed Cortland. CBA’s defense had trouble in the first half as Hunsberger constantly went through them, working her way to six goals as Cortland put the Brothers in a 9-5 deficit. Even when CBA tightened up in the second half and allowed just one goal, Cortland did the same, preventing any comeback attempt as it slowed the game’s tempo down and protected its lead behind goalie Caitlin Cottone’s seven saves. Katie Webster and Taylor Gait, with three goals apiece, accounted for much of CBA’s offense, as Sophie Racciatti got the other goal. The Brothers ended its season with an 11-7 record. J-D, meanwhile, has to go to meet no. 4 seed Cazenovia in Thursday’s quarterfinals at the Fenner Street complex.
