Completing a season-long sweep of its peers, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys track and field team took out the field at last Wednesday’s OHSL Colonial National division championship meet at Bragman Stadium. Overall, the Northstars finished with 162.33 points, well clear of Liverpool, who had 97.33 points to nudge past Rome Free Academy (93 points) for the runner-up spot. Amid the cold and windy conditions, James Thurn still led a 1-2-3 CNS sweep of the 400-meter hurdles. Thurn covered the distance in 57.62 seconds as Andy Neumeister finished second (1:00.79) and Ty Howington took third place, in 1:02.27. Howington and Thurn flipped places in the 110-meter high hurdles, as Howington won in 15.86 seconds, just ahead of Thurn (16.11 seconds) and Neumeister (16.47 seconds), who was in fourth place. Those two hurdle events, alone, generated 46 points. Thurn wasn’t done, either. In the 4×400 relay, he teamed with Jake Whritenour, Jeff Azzoto and Zach Marchese to win that race in a time of 3:33.63, beating Baldwinsville (3:34.28) by less than a second. In the even closer 4×800, CNS (with Azzoto, Whirtenour, Ben Ludovici and Matt Perkins) almost won, but Liverpool, in a time of 8:19.12, beat the Northstars by eight-hundredths of a second. Richie Lickfield claimed the Northstars’ lone victory in field events, in the discus, where he threw it 134 feet 8 inches and surprised Rome Free Academy star Derek Sherman (133 feet 8 inches) for the title. Andy Kahl skipped the high jump, but finished second in the triple jump by going 41 feet 1/4 inch as Steve Jensen (40 feet 8 1/4 inches) and Neumeister (38 feet 10 3/4 inches) took third and fourth, respectively. Jensen was third in the long jump (19 feet 10 1/4 inches) and fifth in the high jump, too, as Tony Mitton cleared 10 feet to share fourth place in the pole vault. Nick Orlando contributed a fifth-place finish in the long jump. Nathan MacNabb stepped to the front in the mile, holding off West Genesee’s Steve Houghmaster to win that race in 4:31.67. Ben Ludovici was third, in 4:40.60, and added a second-place time of 2:06.18 in the 800-meter run. Kevin Cusworth also contributed some key points, taking second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:27.15 and finishing fifth (2:08.06) in the 800. Azzoto got fourth place in the 400-meter dash in 53.77 seconds as John McDonnell earned fifth (11:15.54) in the steeplechase. Eric Munoz worked in the pentathlon, piling up 2,197 points for third place, and Jeff Vanderwalker was fifth in the shot put, tossing it 44 feet 1 1/4 inches.
