Holiday tournament preview

Okay, so you're done with holiday festivities, or you've had it with holiday cheer. You're relieved that radio stations went back to playing actual music instead of the Christmas stuff you've been forced-fed for TWO MONTHS. You're not shopping, and can't stand the thought of it.

During the next four days, there's plenty of opportunities to escape the holiday hangover, in the form of high school tournaments, mostly of the basketball variety. There's plenty to consider.

The boys side alone features 24 different events involving Section III teams, most of them with a local theme, like Cortland vs. Homer, the Cayuga County Tournament and such.

As to the high-profile stuff, there's the Rosemary Corcoran Tournament, where host Bishop Ludden might face state Class A no. 2-ranked Bishop Kearney in the finals, Kearney playing Syracuse Academy of Science in the first round. Not to mention West Genesee perhaps meeting Westhill if the two sides make it to the finals of the Wildcats' brand-new tournament, this after the Warriors took a tough Dec. 23 defeat at Skaneateles.

Then there's Liverpool, having canned Jerry Wilcox just before Christmas, going to CNS's holiday gathering to see if it can get a single win. CBA, off to its own shaky start, stares at a Bottar-Leone Holiday Classic where red-hot Bishop Grimes and St. Joseph's (Buffalo) are on the other side.

To cap it off, merely the Mayor's Roundball Classic at Le Moyne, an event owned by Henninger through much of its decade-long existence. But Corcoran is capable of upending the Black Knights if the two get past Fowler and Nottingham in the early rounds on Wednesday.

On the girls side, a lot of intrigue will be taking place in distant locales. J-D brings a 4-0 mark to the Pete Hyde Tournament at Maine-Endwell, but must face powerful Oneonta in the first round, while at Watkins Glen you've got a unique first-round game between still-unblemished Bishop Ludden and Molly Hourigan-led Jordan-Elbridge. Corcoran and Utica Proctor are both part of the Amsterdam Holiday Showcase.

Much closer to home, Skaneateles opens its holiday tournament with a visit from West Genesee, who just handed Baldwinsville its first defeat. The Bees get Whitesboro in the first round of the Vince Celi Memorial Tournament at ESM. Ludden also has an intriguing non-league game against F-M before its trip to Watkins Glen.

In hockey, West Genesee entertains Canton and Potsdam this week at Shove Park, with Cortland-Homer greeting Cazenovia and F-M at its tournament. Canastota, Jordan-Elbridge, Watertown and CBA all have girls volleyball tournaments to offer, there's indoor track at OCC with the Jensen Holiday Relays, big wrestling meets take place at Central Square, SUNY-Oswego and Dolgeville and even boys volleyball gets underway with "Spiking In the New Year" at VVS.

Vacation? What vacation? At least for the next four days, it's awful busy.
