F-M piles up 49 first-half points against Red Hawks

The Fayetteville-Manlius football team looked in mid-season form. Central Square looked as if it never got off the bus. The Hornets pounded the visiting Red Hawks 55-7 in the Class AA season opener Friday night. The score might have been more lopsided had FM’s starters not spent the entire second half watching from the bench.

Jamesville-Dewitt and West Genesee both put on a display of quality boys lacrosse Saturday afternoon, but there could only be one winner in this annual battle of powerhouse programs. And it proved to be the Red Rams, again, as it continually fought off the Wildcats' second-half rallies to emerge victorious, 13-11. It marked the third straight year J-D has won in this series.

WG girls keep control in sectional finals rematch

West Genesee picked up just about where it left off in 2011, beating Baldwinsville, 11-6, on Saturday in the season opener for both teams. The game was a rematch of last year’s Section III Class A final. The Wildcats won that day and eventually reached the state semifinals.

Dajuan Coleman and Tyler Cavanaugh played like the NCAA Division I recruits they are last night, powering top seed Jamesville-Dewitt past upset-minded New Hartford, 62-44, in Thursday night's Section III Class A boys basketball semifinal at Chittenango High School.

Jamesville-Dewitt's girls basketball team jumped ahead early and never looked back in beating Carthage, 53-30, Thursday night in the Section III Class A semifinal at Chittenango High School. With that win, the top-seeded Red Rams (19-1) square off with no. 3 seed Cortland (17-3) in next Thursday’s Class A championship game at the Carrier Dome. J-D swept the Purple Tigers in regular season play.

WG to meet Rome Free Academy in rematch of 2011 final

Cooly efficient, West Genesee shut out Fayetteville-Manlius, 2-0, Wednesday night in the Section III Division I ice hockey semifinal at Shove Park. The No.1 state-ranked Wildcats got second period goals from Jon Lauer and David Procopio and let its vaunted defense and goaltending do the rest, as goaltender Jacob Pelton needed only 14 saves to post the shutout, WG's 14th of the season.

Lakers to face Oswego after upending state champs

Skaneateles took Cazenovia’s best early shot, survived, and eventually wore down their fellow Lakers, 5-2, Tuesday night in the Section III Division II ice hockey semifinal at Allyn Arena. The win earned no. 2 seed Skaneateles (13-2-6) a berth in Saturday's 1 p.m. title game at Utica Memorial Auditorium. Top seed Oswego will be the opponent after the Buccaneers defeated CBA/J-D 5-3 in Tuesday’s other semifinal.

From the depths of an 0-5 start, the Marcellus boys basketball team now finds itself one of four survivors in the Section III Class B playoffs. Kyle Hastings scored 22 points to power the no. 12 seed Mustangs past no. 13 seed and two-time defending champion Westhill, 43-35, in Friday night's Class B quarterfinals.

Wildcats' 61-45 win earns trip to Class AA semis

West Genesee's girls basketball team dominated the paint in its 61-45 girls’ basketball rout of visiting Corcoran Thursday night in the Section III Class AA quarterfinals. When the no. 3 seed Wildcats (15-4) weren’t dropping in layups, they were pulling down offensive rebounds, and Corcoran coach Jim March came away impressed by the hosts effort down low.

Christian Brothers Academy’s second-half surge ousted Corcoran from the Section III Class AA boys’ basketball playoffs Tuesday night, 56-43, at Lynch Gymnasium. The No. 8 seed Brothers outscored the Cougars, 35-13, after intermission in the first-round game, advancing to face top seed Utica Proctor in Friday night's quarterfinal round.

Cicero-North Syracuse scrapped its way past archrival Liverpool 65-58 Friday night in a Class AA CNYCL National boys’ basketball game. But when Northstars coach John Haas and his Warriors counterpart, Matt Jacob, review the game film, they’ll have to cover their eyes through large parts of it. Turnovers, poor free throw shooting, bundles of missed layups, and mental mistakes far outnumbered sound basketball in front of a large crowd at C-NS.

Spinner nets 21 points in 62-55 win over Raiders

Maybe the Henninger and Utica Proctor boys’ basketball teams like each so much they just have to spend more time together. For the second time in three games, the Black Knights and the Raiders needed overtime to settle the issue. Henninger got the win Friday night, 62-55, on its home court. The Black Knights also captured the other overtime tilt, in last March's Section III Class AA final at Utica Memorial Auditorium.

WG boys fall to Ithaca in hoops tourney final

Westhill beaten by Little Red, Massena

West Genesee proved to be too nice a host in its Booster Club Basketball Holiday Tournament. The Wildcats advanced to Thursday night's final, but had no answers for a strong Ithaca team waiting for them. The Little Red earned the first-place trophy, pulling away from WG in a 68-55 decision.
