Lubo Kalpaktchiev grew up under the Iron Curtain and immigrated to the United States in 1999. Now he teaches students as young as 7 and adults who are well into retirement the fundamentals of fencing at his facility in Shoppingtown Mall, the Syracuse Musketeers Fencing Center. When Lubo Kalpaktchiev arrived in Syracuse from his hometown of Sofia, Bulgaria in 1999, he had nothing – no money, no knowledge of the English language or American culture.
