Gabriel Richard Zaccaria, 70, of Baldwinsville, died at home Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, after a courageous battle with colon cancer. He was surrounded by what he cherished most, his family.
Born in Syracuse on Oct. 11, 1942, to the late Onofrio Zaccaria and Antonina (Lanzafame) Zaccaria, he was known by his family and friends as Butch, Norfie, Zack and Gabe. He attended North High School and was the original “Fonz.” He enjoyed packing friends into his ‘41 Dodge Fluid Drive and later his ‘56 Chevy Bel Air. He was known for drag racing down Pepsi Road. He had an innate passion for history and politics and was thought to surely end up in the White House. He ran for Dewitt Town Supervisor in 1975 and served on many local and national political campaigns.
Always an entrepreneur, Gabriel built many local companies. He participated in the success of Tivoli Foods, Little Mermaid and Cupid Foods. Having lived his life with a severe hearing loss, he finally found a calling in serving those with hearing impairment. He founded Action Ear Hearing (now Beltone) in a single office space he shared with another business, growing it to eight Central New York locations with 17 employees. He took great pride in mentoring his brother, sons, grandson, and granddaughters all of who now serve the local community.
Gabriel was known for his disarming smile, bellowing laugh, and a “well hello there” that said, “You are the center of the universe.” A passionate food connoisseur, he took pride in making home-cooked meals and Sunday dinner for his extended family. He is fondly remembered for reminding us that we could always find “it” at Nichols. Gabriel’s door was always open and everyone felt welcome to enter. He could be counted on to fill your belly, challenge your mind, warm your heart, and protect your soul. For him, the bond of family was everything and in the end his only goal was to leave us stronger in death than in life. “We’ll see you in 32 seconds!”
