Bertrand Levasseur died peacefully Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Francis House. Bertrand was born Nov. 28, 1935, in Saint-François de Madawaska, New Brunswick, Canada to Andre and Marie (Nadeau) Levasseur. As a young man, he worked in Canada and Northern New York and served in both the Canadian and American Air Forces before moving to Long Island and beginning a long career in banking and accounting. He earned his master’s degree and CPA license while working and supporting his family. He retired from the Internal Revenue Service in 2010 after more than 20 years’ service. Bertrand married Mary Brech in 1964 and the two settled in Amityville, N.Y. Bertrand and Mary raised two children, Guy and Monique, and were married 41 years until Mary’s death in 2005.
Fiercely independent, Bertrand remained in his home and continued to volunteer and take daily walks on Jones Beach until the very end of his three-year struggle with cancer. He moved from Amityville to The Nottingham only three months ago, and resided at Francis House just three weeks.
He is survived by his children, Guy J. Levasseur (Karen) and Monique M. Ryan (John), by his grandchildren, Jeanmarie Ryan, Veronica Ryan, and Claire Levasseur, and his siblings, Bernice, Aline, Gemma, Robert, Albert, Urbain, Gerald, Jean, Ludovic and Yvon. He was predeceased by his brother Edgar.
