Gene Sagert, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, surrounded by his four loving daughters. Born in Syracuse, he was a graduate of Most Holy Rosary School. Gene was an Army Veteran of WWII with five Battle Stars for Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe Rhineland and the Battle of the Bulge. He was in the Parade of Liberation in Paris, France. Gene received the Medal for Carbine Expert on July 20, 1943. He received the Medal of Merit from the state of New York, and a Certificate of Recognition from France. He was discharged with the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of the 28th Division, Battery “C” 108th Field Artillery Battalion, of Pennsylvania the Key Stone State.
Gene was a union electrician for IBEW Local 43 for 65 years. He was also a member of the VFW Camillus Post 8664.
In his early years he enjoyed golfing and bowling, skiing, and ice skating. Gene was married to the love of his life Betty for 55 years. They enjoyed going up to Eagle Bay Inlet and Old Forge in the Adirondacks. He loved to walk the golf course in Thendara looking for golf balls. Gene was a parishioner of Holy Family Church in Fairmount. He was also a big Boston Red Sox and Syracuse University sports fan.
Gene was predeceased by his wife loving wife Betty in 2008, his parents Catherine and John Sagert and his brother Bob Sagert and a sister Florence Lynch.
Surviving are his four loving daughters Maureen (Pat) Reap, Beverly (Michael) Sargis, Sheila Sagert and Caroline (Tom) Viau, eight grandchildren, Chris and Becky Sargis, Meghan and Shawn Reap, Bobby, Timmy, Billy and Katie Viau; sister in law Claire McGrath and several Nieces and Nephews.
Gene’s daughters would like to thank Diane Ficarro for the wonderful care she gave their Dad these past weeks.
Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Whelan Brother & Hulchanski Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27 at Holy Family Church, Fairmount. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Gene’s name to Holy Family Food Pantry.
