George L. ("Coach") Wakeman, 93, of Liverpool, formerly of Elbridge and Jordan, passed away peacefully on Nov. 17, 2013, at his home. He was born in Avon, N.Y. on Dec. 6, 1919, the son of the late George and Mabel Wakeman.
He graduated from Geneseo State College in 1941 and also attended Springfield University, SUNY Brockport and Syracuse University. He was a parishioner of St. Patrick's Church in Jordan. After serving as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII in the United States and in the Pacific, he settled in Jordan and began a 37-year career as a physical education teacher and coach in the Jordan and then Jordan-Elbridge School Districts. During his retirement he continued an active life, enjoying golf, tennis, dancing, playing the guitar, singing and playing bridge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Agnes Naomi (Kilburn) Wakeman, his sister Dorothy Whitaker, and a grandson Frederick J. Wakeman. He is survived by his sons Thomas (Connie) of Chillicothe, OH and James (Susan) of North East, PA, grandchildren Kenneth Wakeman, Anna Hartwell, Charles (Sarah) Wakeman, William (Nancy) Wakeman and Joseph Wakeman; along with nine great grandchildren. In addition to family members, he leaves behind many dear friends, including Edith Farnham, and the residents and staff of the Parkrose Estates Retirement Community.
Calling hours: 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, at the Bush Funeral Home, 120 East Main St., Elbridge. Mass of Christian burial: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at St. Patrick's Church, Jordan. Rite of committal and burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Church, PO Box 567, 28 North Main St., Jordan, NY 13080-0567 or a charity of one's choice.
