Shirley Lepkowski

unknown - November 8, 2013

Shirley Rita Lepkowski, 77, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, surrounded by her family. Shirley was born and raised in Moscow, PA and was a 1954 graduate of West Scranton High School. She married John F. Lepkowski of Scranton, PA on November 24, 1955. She and John lived and raised their family in Binghamton, and later in Liverpool, where they resided for the remaining years of Shirley’s life. Shirley will lovingly be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Family came first and foremost to Shirley; hers meant everything to her. Her family gatherings, especially her annual Easter egg hunts for her grandchildren, visits to or from her family in FL, family reunions in PA, and her annual trips to the NY State Fair were her most important, cherished activities. During her early years in Liverpool, she was active in Girl Scouts of America as a brownie leader. She later passionately taught chair and basket weaving through Liverpool Adult Education, having articles of both crafts displayed at the NY State Fair. Hundreds of her baskets are now keepsakes of many family and friends around the country. Shirley was an extremely talented seamstress, a gift she received from her mother and has since passed on to her family. She did countless sewing projects and tailoring for years, for not only her family, but for many friends. She was very talented in all aspects of crafting. Shirley had also been employed by Carpet Gallery in North Syracuse and the Liverpool branch of Realty USA. With her husband John, she enjoyed their gatherings with friends as well as their participation in league bowling and square dancing. Shirley was most generous and gracious to all and was always there for anyone in need. She was a parishioner of Christ the King Church in Liverpool, where she volunteered numerous hours, as well as making sandwiches for Catholic Charities Oxford House. One of Shirley’s favorite pastimes in her later years was playing cards at the Clay Senior Center luncheon gatherings, and she always enjoyed a good fish fry at the Cicero American Legion. She was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Ceil Kessler, and her older brother, Edward Kessler.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, John F. Lepkowski of Liverpool; her four daughters, Joan (Chrys) Panayiotou of Fort Pierce, FL; Mary Lepkowski of Liverpool; Barbara (Richard) Carley of Walworth, NY; and Theresa (David) Carta of Baldwinsville; her 11 beautiful grandchildren; Rachel, Andrea, Kyle, Jessica, Rebecca, Peter, Chrys, Richard, Sara, John, and Bridget; several nieces, a nephew, and numerous friends.
There will be no calling hours. Mass of Christian burial: 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in Christ the King Church, 21 Cherry Tree Circle, Liverpool. Contributions in Shirley’s memory may be made to Hospice of CNY, 990 Seventh North Street, Liverpool, NY 13088.
