Caroline A. Welch Straub, 96, former resident of New Woodstock, died at her home in Quinque, Va., on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013. A native of Oneida, she had lived in Virginia for 35 years. She retired from the New York State school system after teaching for 30 years and was a member of the NYS Retired Teacher’s Association. Caroline was a member of the Stannardsville, Va., United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
In Oneida, Caroline was united in marriage to M. Lloyd Straub on June 26, 1943. Lloyd died suddenly in Utica while visiting with close friends and relatives in July of 2008. Caroline was also preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Florence Welch and two brothers, Emerson and Edwin Welch.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda Swisher of Barboursville, Va., Maryanne Berger of Quinque, Va., and Carol (Vernon) Mechtensimer of Summersville, S.C.; four grandchildren, Kimberly Clows and Kelly Cannon both of Florida, Lynne Marie Berger of Utica and Michael (Chris) Berger of Buffalo; also four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. at the Stannardsville United Methodist Church led by Pastor Chuck Winner. Burial at Cremation Society of Virginia. Memorial donations may be made to the Green County (VA) Rescue Squad.
