Esther King Hawthorne, age 95, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center. Esther was born on Dec. 4, 1917, in Clay, New York. She was a graduate of Oswego State Teacher’s College class of 1937, and a graduate of Syracuse University. Esther was employed as a teacher in both Ithaca and Syracuse public schools retiring after 37 years. She was a charter member of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in North Syracuse, and was also a member of the Syracuse University Women’s Alumni and NYS Retired Teacher’s Association. Esther is predeceased by her husband, Leslie Hawthorne and her sisters, Erma Hughson and Celia Shriner.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her sister, Alice Haven of North Syracuse; nieces, Rita (Leonard) Busse; Dawn (Richard) Harrington; Inez (Harold) Baker; nephews, Kenneth Haven; Merle (Mary) Hughson. Graveside service and burial: 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, in Pine Plains Cemetery, Clay, NY.
