Barry E. Katz, a newspaper reporter, editor for more than 30 years, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 27, 2013. He was 63. Katz received degrees in political science from the Pennsylvania State University in 1975 and journalism from the University of Missouri in 1977. He spent four years in the U.S. Army Security Agency, including a year and a half in Vietnam. Katz worked as a reporter at the Binghamton Evening Press before joining the Syracuse Herald-Journal in 1985. There, he served as night city editor, executive news editor, and investigative projects editor. For much of the past decade, he painstakingly wrote his sharp, concise editorials from his home as he battled the harsh limitations imposed by his continuing fight with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. He taught journalism at Syracuse University from 1999-2002 and wrote editorials for the Post-Standard from 2003 until 2012. Katz is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Paula; his cherished sons, Christopher of Rochester, and Gregory of Brooklyn; his sister, Michelle Melching of Langhorne, PA.
