Helen M. Mahony, 84, a long-time resident of Skaneateles, found her pot of gold at the end of the rainbow on March 13, 2013. She is predeceased by her parents, Denis Mahony and Margaret Stohlman Mahony, her brother, Robert Joseph Mahony, her sister Margaret Mahony Scholpp and brother-in-law, George Scholpp.
She is survived by her brother, William Mahony (Joanne) of Indianapolis, IN; her sister-in-law, Marjorie N. Mahony of Fayetteville, her nephews Robert P. Mahony (Sara) of Fayetteville, Denis Mahony (Mary) of Virginia Beach, VA; Frederick (Kim) Scholpp, of Norge, VA; nieces Nancy (Tony) Bowman and Jill Mahony, all of Indianapolis, IN; In addition, she is survived by her great-nieces, Erin, Meghan, Macy, and Mara Mahony and her great- nephew, Martin Scholpp.
Helen attended Central High School in Syracuse and then graduated, summa cum laude, from Syracuse University. She received her master’s degree in education from Cortland State College. She enjoyed a long, satisfying career as a well-loved elementary school teacher. She spent many years teaching at State Street Elementary School in Skaneateles, where she worked until her retirement. Helen enjoyed golf, bowling and bridge club.
She participated in many YMCA Folksmarches, and she was world traveled, proudly participating in the Auburn Travel Club for many years. She volunteered at SAVES and the Laker Limo in Skaneateles, and she was a passionate Literacy Volunteer where she was very generous with her time.
Helen was very proud of her Irish heritage and she surrounded herself with beautiful treasures from Ireland, and just about anything green. She always looked forward to hosting her annual Irish Coffee on St. Patrick's Day.
Calling hours: 4-6 p.m. March 21 at Robert D. Gray Funeral Home, 49 Jordan St., Skaneateles. Mass of Christian burial: 10 a.m. March 22 at St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church. Burial at St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt.
