Edward J. Burke

Edward J. Burke, 89, of North Syracuse died Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at his daughter's home. A native of South Bend, IN, he played high school football and was a life-long fan of the Chicago Cubs. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame, was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and served in the Navy during WWII aboard the USS Hilary P. Jones as engineer. The Hilary P. Jones was present during the signing of the Japanese surrender documents ending WW II. After the war, he worked as a mechanical engineer and retired from Carrier Corp.
He was a member of the Pastime Club, enjoyed playing golf and following Notre Dame Football. He was a long standing member of St. Rose of Lima parish in North Syracuse and served many years as a church usher.
Mr. Burke was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, M. Harriott Gooley Burke on November 30, 2005.
Surviving are his children, Kathryn A. (Thomas) Corcoran and Edward J. (Gerianne) Burke, III; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Services: 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 1, at Fergerson Funeral Home with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church followed by burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt. Calling hours: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 30, at the funeral home, 215 South Main Street, North Syracuse.
