Barbara C. “Ma Van” VanHousen, 75, of Cobblestone Apartments in Cicero, passed away suddenly on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013. Barbara was born in Oswego and graduated from Oswego High School in 1955. She resided in the Cicero/Clay area for the past 38 years and was the daughter of the late William and Clare (Lewis) Cook.
Barbara was the manager of Chetties Cafe in Penn Can Mall and was also employed as a salesperson for Kay Jewelers in North Syracuse and A.D.P. in Liverpool. She was a former member of the Lakeshore Yacht Club and a die-hard Yankees fan. Barbara was a huge Syracuse University Sports enthusiast and especially enjoyed their srestling events. She attended St. Rose of Lima Church in North Syracuse.
Barbara was predeceased by her beloved husband of 48 years, Arthur, in 2008 and by her brother, Donald Cook.
Barbara is survived by three children: Arthur (Frieda) of Lyncourt, Eliza (Michael) Indick of Cicero, and Matthew (Amy) of AZ; an aunt, Nettie Lewis of Oswego; her five grandchildren: Erica, Arthur, Alessandra, Michael, and Angelo; two great grandsons, Mason and Reid; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Barbara's memory may be made to the Gene Mills Wrestling Camp Fund, Payable to: Pin2Win Inc., 4024 Pinyon Pine Path, Liverpool, NY 13090-1114. Calling hours: 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24 at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Road, Mattydale, with a 7 p.m. funeral service following.
