Dorothy B. Van Luven, 94, of Port Orange, FL, and formerly of Syracuse and Minoa, died on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013. She was born in Henrietta, N.Y., on Aug. 27, 1918.
Mrs. Van Luven was a volunteer’s volunteer, and a foster mother to 17 infants. She supported the Salvation Army and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Syracuse.
Dorothy enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, dress making, and plastic canvas work. She was able to raise money for charity for many years by making and raffling afghans and other handcrafts. She also spent much of her time taking care of many friends and neighbors during their illnesses.
She was predeceased by her husband, Carleton E. Van Luven, Sr. on July 10, 1985 and by a son Carleton E. Van Luven, Jr. on April 18, 1958.
Dorothy is survived by her son William J. Van Luven of Clinton Twp., MI; grandchildren, Judith E. (Alan) Miller of Farmington Hills, MI, and W. James (Candice) Van Luven of Troy, MI; foster son Brian (Kathy) Wallace of Visalia, CA., great grandchildren, Taylor Anne Van Luven, Logan William and Gavin James Miller.
Funeral services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Newell-Fay Manlius Chapel. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Syracuse. Calling hours: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 8171 Cazenovia Rd.
