Howard Stackpole, Jr.

Howard Thompson Stackpole, Jr., 88, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at Francis House with his family by his side. He was born in Biddeford, Maine, on May 25, 1925 and graduated from Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine in 1943.
He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and then went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Gorham State Teacher's College and a Master's degree from University of Connecticut. He worked as an educator in Maine, Connecticut and Minnesota before moving to Fayetteville, NY in 1970. He worked as an elementary school principal in the Syracuse City School District until his retirement in 1985.
Howard loved to read and travel. He traveled extensively across the United States with his family, making a point of visiting every state. After retirement, he and his wife, Marguerite, traveled abroad, visiting several countries and continents.
Howard is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marguerite; children, William Stackpole of Seattle, WA, Mary (Joseph) Lepak of Colchester, CT, Kerry (Miriam) Stackpole of Alexandria, VA, Patricia (Eric) Gantley of Syracuse, NY, Col. Thomas (Sara) Stackpole of Wiesbaden, Germany; brothers, Dr. James (Jan) Stackpole of Burlington, VT, David (Shirley) Stackpole of Hollis, NH; and special sister-in-law, Lois (Stephen) Alley of Rockport, ME. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Caroline Stackpole; his sister, Laurie Mitchell; his brothers, Robert Stackpole and Joseph Stackpole; and his daughter, Cathy Charpentier.
Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held at a future date in New Hampshire.
