DeEtte G. Ballantyne, 98, of formerly of Pulaski and Westvale died Saturday, Dec., 14, 2013. Born in Port Byron she graduated from Auburn High School, Wheaton College and Columbia University. DeEtte was the former head of social services at Syracuse Memorial Hospital and later retired in 1980 after 15 years as a social worker in the Syracuse City Schools. She volunteered as a cook at an Indian School in Tempe, AZ, at the Church World Services in Baltimore, MD and many other religious groups. She was named in 1976 Post Standard Woman of the Year as a “Woman of Achievement” for social services. After her retirement and a full life of living, loving and travelling with her husband Tom she moved to her lovely cottage on Lake Ontario. There she enjoyed the company of her many friends, sharing stories and iced tea while watching beautiful Lake Ontario sunsets.
She was predeceased by husband Thomas in 1972 and her brother Charles O. Barnes in 2002. Sadly DeEtte’s mental state deteriorated and she has been in nursing home care since 2002. Thank you to her caregivers and to those church members that had stayed in touch. She was a long time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by two nieces DeEtte Franz and Jill Barnes both of Malone; two nephews Randy Barnes of Hawley, PA and Jeffrey Barnes of Oswego and their families. She was a wonderful person, really fun Aunt and will be missed.
Calling hour: 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, followed by a service at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1601 Park St., Syracuse, NY 13208.
