Elizabeth “Betty” (Coolican) Wightman, of Fairmount passed away peacefully Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at Community Hospital with her family by her side. Betty was born and raised in Syracuse, and was a graduate of Most Holy Rosary High School where she was a member of the cheerleading squad and member of the Florimel Sorority. She retired from Marine Midland Bank and enjoyed volunteering at Literacy Volunteers. Some of Betty’s favorite pastimes were singing and dancing. She was a longtime communicant of Holy Family Church. Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was predeceased by her husband of 30 years Russell E. Wightman Sr. in 1980, and two grandchildren Richard “RJ” Malys and Elizabeth Anne Malys.
Betty is survived by four children, Russell Jr., of Buffalo, Christine (Richard) Malys, James (Evelyn) Wightman both of Syracuse and Anne (Brad) Storrier of Lafayette. To carry on her legacy are eight grandchildren, Shannon, Erin (Tim), Jim, Brendan, Jonathan, Michelle (Dave), Sean and Jennifer. Also, there are two great-grandchildren, Landyn and Brystol.
Mass of Christian burial: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20 in Holy Family Church, 110 Chapel Drive, Syracuse, NY 13219, with entombment in St. Mary’s Mausoleum, Dewitt. Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at Whelan Bros. & Hulchanski Funeral Home.
