Winifred S. Byrne “Winnie” passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, at Francis House in Syracuse. Winnie grew up on the west side of Syracuse and attended St. Patrick’s High School. She graduated from the Eastman School of Dental Hygiene in Rochester.
She worked in the Syracuse city schools as a dental hygienist, she also worked as a dental hygienist for her father, Dr. Carl Sorgenfrei in the Lowes building in downtown Syracuse. She later married C. Vincent Byrne who predeceased her in 2010. Winnie and Vinnie started their family on Hancock Drive in Syracuse, later moving to Skaneateles where they resided for the last 45 years. Winnie also volunteered at Community General Hospital for many years in the gift shop. She worked for several years at various estate sales, auctions and enjoyed collecting antiques. She was an avid golfer and was a member of the Skaneateles Country Club. One of her favorite passions was golfing which she did in Ireland and Scotland with her beloved husband, Vincent. Most of all she was a loving, involved and devoted mother to seven children and nineteen grandchildren. She loved spending winters in Naples, Fla., golfing and walking the beach. She was also a passionate reader and could often be found reading the latest bestseller.
Surviving are her six children: three daughters, Mary (Dave) B. Prendergast of Skaneateles, Johanna B. Elliott of Camillus, Winifred M. “Wendy” Byrne of Syracuse; three sons, Gerard “Jerry” (Jean) V. Byrne of Marcellus, Mark (Karen) V. Byrne of Skaneateles, Carl V. Byrne of Skaneateles; 19 grandchildren, Winifred, Laura and David Prendergast, Ryan and Peter Elliott Jr., Shawn, Vincent, Hunter and Jeri-Jo Byrne, Stacey, Shelby, Shannon, Matthew and Keegan Byrne, Bailey, Morgann, Abigail, Chloe and Lani Byrne; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister, Mary S. Kearney of Syracuse and two brothers, Carl J. Sorgenfrei of Elmira and Malachy Sorgenfrei of San Antonio, Texas.
Funeral mass: Saturday, Aug. 17, in St. Mary’s of the Lake Church, Skaneateles. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to “Francis House” 108 Michaels Ave, Syracuse, NY 13208. To send condolences visit: robertdgrayfuneralhome.com
